Client numbers continue to increase despite ending of direct referrals from DWP

Food parcels were provided for 416 clients and family members by the Food Hub in March, taking the overall meals total in the first three months of 2024 to over 10,000.

March’s 3,744 meals followed 3,591 meals for 399 people in February and 3,276 meals for 364 in January – a combined total of 10,611 meals for 1,179 people.

This month-on-month increase comes despite the Department of Work and Pensions’ instruction to Jobcentres – including Purley – to stop referring claimants to food banks from mid-February (see our earlier news item).

Meanwhile, the agencies which refer people to the Food Hub continue to express their clients’ gratitude for the food and support they receive.

Recent messages include: “Many thanks for helping us support our families”…“Many thanks – your help is greatly appreciated”…and simply “Thank you for supporting the family.

Clients receive up to four deliveries of emergency food parcels, each containing enough food for three meals a day for three days for each member of the household.

With the fourth delivery we give details of the client’s nearest Food Stop in Purley or Selsdon, for any ongoing support they may need.

To help them make the switch, we offer to pay their first four weeks’ cost of using the Food Stop and to give them pre-paid return bus tickets.
