Supporting Purley Food Hub
If you are looking for a way to serve people in need in the local area, this is a great opportunity. Purley Food Hub is the united response of the churches of Purley and Kenley and the local community to help people in real need. We depend on our volunteers, donors and supporters and would love for more people to be involved.
There are three main ways you can help:
Each month we produce a list of the food and other items we are short of for our clients. The current list for this month appears on our Home page. Every contribution we receive makes a real difference to people in genuine need.
Food donations can be taken to:
- Purley United Reformed Church, 906 Brighton Road, Purley CR8 2LN
(door at the far end of the roadway running along the left side of the church building) on Monday mornings from 9.00am to 12.00noon or if Mondays aren’t possible, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings 9.00am-12.00noon.
There are also donation baskets at:
- Waitrose Sanderstead
- Sainsbury’s Warlingham
- Co-op Hamsey Green
- Sainsbury’s Local, Purley
- plus a yellow wheelie bin at St Mark’s Church, Woodcote, and big yellow One Tin bins at several locations round the borough. These are provided by Croydon Covid-19 Mutual Aid (CCMA) in support of the Food Hub. Click the map to view or download the full list.
Thank you to CCMA and to Rev Fiona Weaver and other volunteers who bring these donations to us, the retailers whose support is so vital, and those making bulk food purchases using money donations we receive.
These face-to-face collections have been suspended because of the pandemic, but we still have baskets and trolleys for people to leave items in at stores in Purley, Coulsdon, Sanderstead, Hamsey Green and Warlingham.
At our Distribution Centre at Purley URC currently we have a full complement of volunteers and we are not seeking to recruit more. When the situation changes we will make an announcement on the News page, so please do keep in touch.
Organise a local collection
A great way to help is to organise a local collection among your family, friends and neighbours and/or through social media. For example Rebecca and Helen have organised collections from their neighbours in Redford Avenue, Coulsdon, and Furze Lane, Purley.
Helen said: “I contacted the chair of our road committee and asked him to email to the 50 houses in the road a letter I had written together with the Food Hub’s monthly food list. Every Friday we open our garage and have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity.”
Elizabeth from Croydon Communities Consortium used nextdoor.co.uk, the neighbourhood hub, to collect and receive donations from people all over Purley, Sanderstead and South Croydon. Thank you all very much.
There are three ways that you can give:
1. Make a one-off or regular donation online, with or without Gift Aid. Under the Gift Aid Scheme tax can be claimed back from HM Revenue & Customs – 25p for every £1 given – which means the Food Hub actually receives more than you give.
2. Donate while shopping online, at no cost to yourself.
3. Make a payment by cheque or standing order direct from your bank account.

Thank you to all our supporters
