Day of action planned for 18th June as part of ‘Guarantee Our Essentials’ campaign.
Food Hub volunteers will be joining with other food banks across the UK in a mass lobby in Westminster on Wednesday 18th June.
The aim is to support leading charities in their Guarantee Our Essentials campaign to increase Universal Credit so that it covers the cost of essentials.
The lobby day is organised by Trussell and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in partnership with IFAN, the Independent Food Aid Network of which Purley Food Hub is part, Feeding Britain, Your Local Pantry, and the Salvation Army.
It will involve a mass gathering of people from community food organisations who will meet their local MPs to discuss the inadequacy of Universal Credit.
Meetings will be held between 10.30am and 6pm. The day will end between 4pm-6pm depending on MP time.
If you would like to be part of the delegation from Croydon South constituency to meet with MP Chris Philp, please sign up via this Eventbrite link.
A Trussell spokesman said: “Our social security system, like our NHS, should be there for us all when we need it most, but right now it’s not even providing enough to cover the cost of life’s essentials.”
IFAN’s director Sabine Goodwin said: “It’s critical that MPs hear from as many people as possible from the frontline about the urgent changes needed to ensure Universal Credit can protect everyone from poverty, and this collective action can make a real difference.”
