Super-challenging charity effort spans the generations

Among the huge number of donations received by the Food Hub in November was £250 of food and essentials delivered by seven-year-old Diya and her family.

Diya, who with brother Aaryan, 10, goes to Beaumont Primary School, Purley, said: “Along with Aaryan, I helped to raise this money in memory of my great-grandmother Shantabaa who sadly passed away in November 2020.

“My family and I set ourselves a challenge to walk or run 5,144 miles in 83 days and raise money for various charities and good causes including food banks. We chose Purley Food Hub for the amazing work you do and to help support our local community.”

Diya’s mum Shinali added: “Shantabaa’s family in the UK consists of nearly 70 family members of whom 30 of us took part in the challenge to walk the 5,144 miles – the exact distance between her house in London to her village in India, where she desperately wanted to go before she passed away but never got the chance. As a family we decided we would walk the distance before her birthday, hence the odd number of days.

“In total we raised £10,000, and the money was split over various charities that were close to Shantabaa, including Newham General Hospital, British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK and COVID relief fund in India. We also donated £3,000 across various food banks in London, Essex, Surrey and Kent, including Purley Food Hub.”

Thank you so much Diya, Aaryan, Shinali and the rest of your wonderful family!
