Unexpected increase in number of large households facing food crisis

Last month was our second busiest May to date, with food provided for 3,870 meals for 430 adults and children, including for a higher number than usual of large families.

It was 800 meals more than in April and takes the overall total for the first five months of 2024 to over 17,500.

The numbers of clients and family members receiving food again varied from session to session, ranging from 26 (234 meals) on Wednesday 1st May to 69 (621 meals) on Saturday 25th.

Families served included several of six and eight members…and one of 10 who, thanks to our generous donors – and our teams of packers and delivery drivers – received 17 bags of food, toiletries and household essentials.

Meanwhile, the Management Committee continues to monitor the effects on client numbers of Purley Jobcentre no longer directly referring claimants to us. Instead, the Jobcentre signposts them to organisations such as Purley Cross Centre and Croydon Council’s Discretionary Support Team.
